In 2010, 16-year-old Kalief Browder was sucked into the criminal justice system for three years without trial, sequestered on Rikers Island and in 2013 released without any apology or explanation. He became one of many victims in a flawed judicial system in the United States. Prior to his incarceration, he had no known mental health issues. In 2015, Browder committed suicide. He suffered from depression and paranoia.
